I think pretty boys that look very non threatening are attractive to younger teen girls.

I totally understood the shock value/non conformity in baby boomers growing hair long to be different than the WWII generation who came home and kept their hair very short.
I totally understood the shock value in doing the androgyny thing like Bowie, and the over the top transvestite-ish New York Dolls, Alice Cooper Band and others who followed for a while.
But when it got to be the boys in so many bands blowing their hair out and wearing the exact same make-up as their girlfriends, and many of the same clothes, it seemed more like they were following what came before them to conform, and not to do something new, and it just fed off of itself for some time.
I think many did it because they saw others doing it and it looked like the way to get signed and/or succeed.
Eventually band management and record companies were telling them to look that way, same as management/record companies had done before.
I feel the same way about much of the music of that time as well.
