Double Bass Core K52 Q locally built, VS Shen Sb-180

All good, up to this bit which really soured me:

I hope Mr. Hull has more sense, class, and better things to do than to try and pursue the dead end of a libel (not slander) suit against the author of the type of internet post seen here. It seems it would be pretty hard to show suffering/damages or that what was stated was anything beyond opinion, but I'm not a lawyer. Better for Mr. Hull to let his happy customers and his work speak for him as do the respected luthiers here. Sometimes it's best to stick to the high road.

+1. Well said as always. I am not sure he was serious about that, but somethings are better left unsaid.

The bass components arived today as I was leaving the shop. They will be unpacked for me by the time I get there in the morning. I plan to post some pics of the "raw materials"
which isn't an accurate term since they are preshaped. But I am an artist, and those are my raw materails. haha

Sweet! I am going to start a new point about the build. You are of course free to start your own post about your process. Or email the pix and I'll put em up!

If you're talking about new threads, I sure hope you won't do that. It would be best to put the pics and further posts right here in this one. Two or three separate threads devoted to your bass would, IMO, be a bit much.

Nice pics!

Any new thoughts to make this a removable neck model?
Was a 'biscuit' or a 'sound post patch', put in on the back? It can be a good thing to do for plywood back basses.

What colour are you thinking of for this? Will it be a matte finish? What kind of varnish will it be?

Well, I can't comment on the biscuit, and am not planning on going the removable neck route. The removable neck idea is awesome but I don't have the budget for it, I am keeping this bass basic. For the colour, I want a deep chocolate stain, similar to the Cleveland or Upton stain. I think Grant is using a spirit varnish in a matte finish. The last thing I want is a glossy, caked on finish

Nice pix, thanks. Might want to think twice about a spirit varnish. Check the threads here if you want to learn about the pros and cons. Assuming you have the option, there are, IMO, better choices. :)

I need to review this discussion with Grant, but I believe he was planning to French polish it with spirit varnish. I will talk to him about it and get his opinion about oil vs spirit

Here's another example of how TB can serve as a great resource. Right here in these threads you can read the opinion of accomplished DB luthiers on this topic.

Here is a current pic...
