cotton on strings?

Hi, I was looking around and saw a photo of a bass with what appears to be cotton string around the strings in the area of the headstock. Can I add this to my current bass strings, and how?

Thanks.

First, it's "silk" you're referring to, not "cotton". I don't think it's something you can do yourself after the fact as it is a part of the string-winding process at the factory.

Some strings come with silk, while other don't.

You can do some research here: Silk colors

If you have a specific type of string you're interested in and would like to know which brand(s) would have silk on them, let us know. Most flats do come with silk, but only a few manufacturers still put silk on rounds.
