I was an original Alt-Rock/Pop bassist for many years. I had played in some really awesome bands - from 'Noveau Reach' in South Florida formerly 'The Chiclids' (early 80's - New Wave music) to 'The Adopted' (early to mid 90's then from 2000 till about 2010). I never ever considered playing Country music at the time. I met my wife in late 1999 - she is a HUGE Country fan but I was not but I respected her tastes in music. I decided to try an original Country band around 07 or 08 on the side (while I was in 'The Adopted') for a few months. That did not work out but I did enjoy creating my own 'country'ish' basslines. I evenutally moved on to another Alt-Rock original band but it just was not what I wanted...something was missing for me as far as playing bass in a band. I decided to try a Country Covers band. I started to listen to the Country tunes I had to learn and found the bass very 'active' and more interesting than the bass I was playing previously. I never realized how much bass was actually being played in many Country tunes (new & old songs) and how 'complicated' many songs where (guitar/bass runs, breaks, changes etc.). This is what I feel I needed to bring me to another level. Also, I never used to listen to lyrics but now I do...I can relate to many Country songs. I play a US Peavey Cirrus 5 string and it fits the music very well (the low B is very handy!).
