I don't really play that much country anymore, but I play a four string tuned to DGCF, which takes care of almost all of the things I'd need a fiver to play. If I need things lower than that I'll drop tune to C.
I've found that downtuned four strings are actually pretty common amongst Nashville players nowadays, lots of people seem to prefer the aesthetic of a four string bass but they increasingly need lower notes. Of course, there's music out there that goes lower than would be practical on a four string, but getting the low D goes a long way.
