the cat empire are great and mainly horns, if you do have a DB player, a vocalist and possibly someone on turntable(not neccacary) cover them

I'm down with Cat Empire and am buying a double bass in the next month or two. I have an EUB for now that should be sufficient. I'm going through their catalog right now to find something.
We've also found the Boneshaker's version of Zappa's "Dirty Love" and Galactic covering Sabbath's "Sweet Leaf." Fishbone is another band I'm checking into...

Cool under the Rader Album for Horns is the All the Love you Need Album by Big Head Todd and The Monsters. Great stuff on there. Their new Album Rocksteady is cool as well sorta 70's vibe to it. Great Horn parts in there though!
I seem to remember Zappa doing an arrangement of Stairway To Heaven with the horn section playing Page's solo... both edgy and a bit tongue-in-cheek. Also, Ring Of Fire by Johnny Cash has horn parts in it and some rockers dig Cash, people seem to love it when my band does it even with one trumpet playing.
Why has no one yet mentioned "No Reply at All" by Genesis?

My friend's showcase in college was called "Tropical Pop Fantastic"
Exactly as it sounds... took 13 pop songs (When Doves Cry, Girls Wanna Have Fun etc) and brought in traditional latin rhythm instrumentation... Had some salsas, some cumbias, and 1 of a bunch of other styles...

Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer. Immediately recognizable but not super mainstream, and a cool bass riff IMHO.
You could look into Streetlight Manifesto. If you don't particularly like their original material they did an entire album of ska covers including Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard and Just by Radiohead.

That said, I'm gonna throw something crazy out there: Listening Primus' John The Fisherman, I've always thought that Ler plays the guitar the same way horns serve old-school funk cuts. I think it'd be awesome if someone put together a James Brown-style cover of that with the horns doing the guitar part and funking up the bass and drums some more.
