Cover Song Advice

+1 to adapting a classic song to your style. Do NOT play a classic rock song AS a classic rock song, but if you can put a clear New Rock spin on a recognizable classic (or a recent pop hit) I think you're golden. I'm thinking of the way Yes used to do "America," or Joss Stone doing "Fell in Love with a Boy" from the White Stripes' "Fell in Love with a Girl" - clearly, completely redone in the band's own style rather than reproducing the original.

It really depends on your musician's strengths. If you have a hero lead guitarist, try something like Metallica for example. More likely you would want to pick something that's easy for everyone in the band to play though. I've heard a lot of Metallica covers that sounded like crap because they couldn't play the parts. Play to your strengths.

Pick a song to rework and own it!

There's a band in these parts, that redid Fire Down Below by Bob Seger. Around here, Bob Seger is a diety, but the hard rock stations can't play any of his tunes. Until now that is......

Fire Down Below - Wayland - YouTube

Find a song that's a little tired and breathe new life into it.
Wayland is a great band, check out their Led Zep cover,Mitch nails it!

I would not go with an "old classic" for a new rock station. Consider the following. The cover:

1 has to fit the style of your originals
2 should be recognizable to/appreciated by the listener, but not a "juke box" cover

Come up with a short list, and ask friends who listen to that station which they think works best.
