I hadn't really been touching my DB much at all over the past couple of months, except for a few country gigs here and there. Last night the mando player points out to me how much my bridge is leaning towards the fingerboard.. I hadn't even noticed. It was a significant incline. So later on I loosen the strings enough to move the bridge and get it in the right spot, centered between the inside notches between the F holes. I get it perpendicular to the top of the body.
All is looking good.. I tune up, starting with the D and A and then the G and E. I hear the usually creaking of tuning up loose strings, but it seemed to me to be a little more aggressive than usual. Then again, I am always paranoid when it comes to that. After being all tuned up, I am not sure if it is just in my head or if the bass doesn't sound as loud as it did. Out of sheer curiosity, I look inside and see a crack in the sound post. To my knowledge it still looks like it is in the right spot. The crack is in the middle of it on one side, but not from the top or the bottom. I haven't had any significant impact or drops, to my knowledge, and no one else plays my bass except me.. so I would know if that was the case. I also don't know if this crack existed prior to adjusting the bridge.
I may be fetching for obvious information, but I want to know if this will be a problem ( I am guessing it is). I am also going to guess a replacement is in order, and am wondering how much it would run me for a professional to do so. At this point I am afraid to tamper with much of anything.
