Thanks JC... I bought one before I had my upright. I used an Eminence EUB, Quilter Bass Block, and 18. Sound wasn’t what I was looking for at all. Might try the MAS again, but for now I’m using cabs that are completely finished and ready to go. My Bergantinos are far superior to any cab I’ve ever used, and during many years of touring I’ve used them all. I have the Crazy 88 and love the tight, punchy, clean tone. I may try MAS again, but for right now I really want to try the 16 lb. Crazy 8...but I’m losing patience with a company who doesn’t want to answer inquiries about their product.

Bergantino builds beautiful cabinets. They certainly sound great as well. I've only known one player here in St. Louis who had them as their high end gear (not that MAS isn't mind you)

What I remember about them is how smooth their frequency response was. It didn't seem to matter what register you were playing in. The transition between low b up to notes in the upper register was

even from note to note. If you didn't really like the MAS 1/8 I'd be really surprised if you found the Crazy 8 suits you. If you haven't played the Acme Low B-1 it's a great little DB cabinet if you're looking

for something small and light. At the time the Acme came around I had a Euphonic Audio VL 108, which was very nice, but doesn't get very loud without losing it's mojo. Just my take of course.

I’ve stated that at the time I owned the MAS 1/8, I was in the early months of my transition to upright bass. The other gear in my chain was less than desirable in my sound chain and what I have now fits my taste much better....Upton Bohemian, Krivo/Yamahiko, Grace Felix, Bergantino Forte and Reference 112’s (two)...also Aguilar DB 751, DB 212, and DB 115...GK 800RB, Hartke 210 and 115. The only thing I had together at the same time were the Berg 112’s and MAS 1/8. There was no comparison between them as one Berg 112 had way more punch, clarity, volume, etc...as you would expect vs a 8” speaker, even the venerable MAS 1/8. Plus, when Jim Bergantino puts a product on the market it is completely ready to go, no need for consumers to do “R & D” for the builder. I personally find the Crazy 88 to be very similar in sound, I’m really pleased with how punchy and tight the sound is. However, none of these are as light as the 1/8 and that still may very well be the best out there pound for pound. Just my take of course, as always.

Like you I used to have quite a stable of cabinets and heads sitting around. A couple of years ago I thinned the heard a little selling off 3 Euphonic Audio Cabinets, VL 208 and 2 VL 108’s a Audiokinesis -TC 112, and my LDS 2x8 3 Way. I’m down to The MAS 1/8 and a MAS 4x5.5. Since they are both powered I just use the Grace or a Headway and take the right cabinet for the space. Just my approach.

For my upright and electric needs I have found the Barefaced cabs to work amazing. I use a One10, Super Midget, and BB2. I use various combinations depending on the gig. I most recently got the One10, and while it’s not as hifi as the others or the cabs mentioned here, it’s really super punchy and works great for upright. I still have some GAS, but not for cabs. My Barefaced cabs have filled that void, and I couldn’t be happier.

Yeah Ric, I’m getting ready to thin the herd. Plan on selling Hartkes, Aguilars, my Walkabout 112, and keep the Bergs...at least that’s the plan...for now...

I actually have an 88 now (and love it), an 8 would complete my wish list. I’ve got some severe tinnitus and hearing loss from chemo so am able to play only with somewhat quite drummers, that’s what started me on the URB journey in the first place. I’m loving the bluegrass/Americana/jazz genres like never before. I won’t need anything bigger than my Berg 112’s and Crazy 8/88 so I will be selling some BIG gear very soon, and very reasonably priced!

A couple of folks at the Greenboy forum have posted of recent problems communicating with Joseph Hawley, and have instead contacted Paul Tollini, who has answered promptly. A number of folks have mentioned Paul Tollini's (Scabbey Road) as providing great service and quality of work, so I'd suggest checking with him.
