Crest Prolite 3 and HPF questions

I know there are more threads about HPFs than you can shake a stick at, and I haven't been able to find an answer to my specific question.

Amp is Crest Prolite 3, Preamp is Ampeg SVT-IIp, connected via 1/4". I am running the HPF because I would occasionally send the amp into protect mode with no filtering. The Crest HPF is set at 100hz. I do realize this is high.

My question is what effect the fact that it is a 4th order HPF has on the equation. With 100hz being high, I am probably looking at adding a stand alone HPF, and I'd like to avoid that.

Any advice or info is appreciated!

Couple different cabs, Ampeg 8x10 and SWR 8x8. I think it is actually going into speaker protection, the amp goes silent for a millisecond and then back. Running it bridged, and those are both 4 ohm cabs. Both front knobs turned to max

I run the preamp fairly flat, gain until I reach required volume. No Eq, no frequency boost switches engaged. Connection between the 2 is just using the 1/4 cable, but recently changed to XLR. I haven't tried again sans HPF since then.

This is my first pre/power amp setup so any ideas are appreciated.

OK, I hear "two 4 ohm cabinets" so you have a 2 ohm load.

I hear "bridged" so effectively that meand that each side of your amp is seeing a 1 ohm load.

I have never seen a bass amp (and not many power amps) that are rated for 1 ohm loads (or 2 ohm bridged - an amp that takes 2 ohm per channel will be rated *4* ohm bridged) so likely it *IS* droppiing into protect due to an inappropriate load in that config.

I am not sure I am familiar with the concept of too much, but you are probably right.

I was under the impression that most people on TB with the 3 were running it Bridged into a 4 ohm cab. I will definitely try it unbridged and see how it goes.
 
With that kind of power, driving it hard could easily have use the VC mostly outside the magnetic gap. This causes the impedance of the cabinet to drop well below the nominal 4 ohms, down close to the DCR of the driver which results in a nominal ~3 ohm load. This is an illegal load in bridge mode and will result in protective shutdown.

There’s more than enough power to run only one channel and not bridged, I predict that your “problem” goes away completely.
 
I've not tried it unbridged. It certainly would have plenty of power, just didn't see any reason not to run it bridged. I will give it a shot, thanks for the suggestion.

Why are we still running power amps in bridged mode these days? Stereo/Parallel mode is the way to go. That amp has a load of power NOT bridged. You can run both cabs in Stereo/Parallel mode. 3000w (bridged) into your cabs is insane and totally NOT needed! Even in Stereo/Parallel mode you're pushing 900w into a 4ohm cab.
 
Good advice in this thread. Glad you seem willing to take it to heart! I have been using rack-mounted preamps and power amps since the early 80s and never found it necessary to run an amp in bridged mode. Part of my reluctance has been reading about experienced players who blew speakers doing so. Whatever the problem was with the way you had your rig configured you are lucky there was no damage to any of the components.

FWIW... I have been using a ProLite 3.0 since 2018 9in with no issues, great amp. Enjoy!
 
Finally circled back to giving this a shot. Seems that like most things, there was a few issues here.

Initially, moving to parallel and only using 1 channel didn't help, and it was shutting off more frequently than I remember, and this was at bedroom volumes. Kind of made me wonder about the preamp, and I recalled that I never had this issue when I used a VT-Bass pedal as a preamp.

Gave a shot to using the -20db function of the preamp, and that appear to have cleared up the issue. I guess the preamp just hit the input too hard.

Again, sincere thanks to you all. Looking forward to putting it through its paces this week at practice!

The non-DSP versions of the Prolite 2.0 and 3.0 (I had a 2.0 for awhile) are more sensitive than a lot of racked poweramps -- they are easy to drive (don't require that much juice) from a preamp to reach full power (the 3.0 requires only 0.74 volts from the preamp when driving a 4 Ohm load).

This matches up pretty well with a lot of bass instrument pres, actually, though some can put out a good deal more juice depending on how hard you hit them.

The manual for the SVT IIP says it'll put out "1 Volt RMS maximum, 3.5 V RMS with EQ." (EQ is just another frequency-limited gain stage.)

I don't know what that looks like with peaks or what other factors might influence its output (aside from the input signal and how you EQ it), but it looks capable of clipping the front-end of the Pro-Lite without too much trouble. I also don't know if clipping the front end of the 3.0 is enough to shut it down or merely make ugly clipping sounds.

If the -20 dB pad for the balanced output on the back helps, by all means use it. You can also play around with gain-staging between the first volume control, the +/- 10 dB on the graphic EQ, and the attenuators on the Pro-Lite to see what gives you the best results (best sound, S/N ratio, dynamic response).

Non-bridged, with proper gain-staging, running 800 or 900 watts off a side into a 4 Ohm load, though, the 3.0 should be able to drive either of your 4 Ohm cabs (810 or 8x8) to its limits. 100 Hz HPF on the back of the amp (2nd order, per datasheet -- should be 12 dB/octave, not 24) would typically be employed for tops/subs, not a stand-alone bass cab (pretty high for that).

Again, I don't know how the amp behaves if you simply hit the front end too hard (that it was shutting down at bedroom volumes and then stopped when you engaged the 20 dB pad on the pre is suggestive). Have you tried the unbalanced outputs? It might be that, with your bass and EQ settings, you don't have to turn the preamp master up very high at all to drive the power amp to full power.

Good luck at practice this week -- hope it works well for you and that some simple gain-staging is enough to sort it out!

If the amp is still shutting down, you might have other issues. (Worth making sure that the fans are running well and unobstructed.)

If it shuts down into a 4 ohm load running one channel in stereo or parallel mono mode, there is either something wrong with the amp or the cabinet. It should not shut down even when driven very hard.

Do you have the amp’s limiter engaged?
