as others have said, when changing string types and gauges it is pretty much necessary to get a setup done. sounds like a setup issue to me. could be technique also, especially if you are a beginner. but have a tech look at your bass with the strings on it that you like. thats the starting point. learning on a bass that is not set up right is even more difficult.
