Crown Drivecore XLS1000

Thanks for that, I've been trying to find the VT Bass's output sensitivity but can't find that number anywhere. It does have a level knob, as well as a (over)drive knob too, and those seem to be variables. From what I've read, if anything people seem to say that it's very hot, almost too much, so I should be okay, but I'll keep trying to find the numbers... Thanks again for giving me all of that info.
 
Ok I got a question. I have 2 preamps over my drivecore 1500 -- I "linked" the drivecore input channels with a cable, and in stereo mode I'm able to use two instruments. Is this ok to run at higher volumes? Also, will I be able to run bridged mode in this way? What kind of speakon configuration should I be running?

I don't think you'd want to link the DriveCore's input chnls for stereo.
Just run one preamp's output into one DriveCore input and the other into the other.
You could run the same instrument into each preamp with a mixer or connect two different instruments.
Higher volumes = OK
Bridging means you use only one input and the DriveCore's two chnls are electrically combined into one chnl.
 
It is those Crown amps that do it to it.

My son got his Rack stolen. It had his amp
and everything in it except the speakers
and the basses.

So, I got a Crown XLS 202 off eBay for
$100 plus $30 shipping. Everybody was
asleep that morning,,, lol

That's $130 for an amp that cranks out 600
watts bridged at 8 ohms. That's just under
the XLS 1000 which cranks 700 watts.

The only preamp I got son was a Hartkee
Bass Attack stomp box. That's the preamp.. :hmm:

He has a 4X10 Genz Benz cab rated at 700
watts rms at 8 ohms. Nice match for the 202.

Crown amps put out better sound.

He does need a decent preamp though,

I forgot to mention that I'm just using one cabinet. My problem is that I want 2 inputs into one output. Stereo mode sends input 1 to speakon 1 and input 2 to speakon 2, right? But I get both channels sounding from chnl1 output if I link the drivecore inputs. Bridge mode is 1+ and 2+ so it will output both inputs if I don't link, but I don't know how that will affect the signal since it's only 1+ and 2+. edit: actually i lied, i was wrong, i still need to link the inputs in bridge mono mode to get the channel 2 input. :/ i am so confused. just started another thread so that more people will see it.

I just got back online to add that "yeah, you'd also need two cabs" for stereo.

For simultaneously using two inputs into one output, you need a mixer (or something that does the same thing).

Not familiar with some of the newer dsp-front end power amps; they might have similar functionality available.
 
Since I've got my SWR ST220, I've been looking for a power amp so I can get that sweet preamp sound and still push my megoliath 810. I'm thinking this looks like a great way to go, considering the amplite I was thinking of getting is only 400w. 1100w sounds like more than enough to me!
 
Hi guys, a quick question about the Crown XLS1000. I picked one up a couple of weeks ago and am sitting around waiting for my cabinet to arrive, which has led to do a lot of (probably unnecessary) research, and a lot of confusing concepts.

Bob Lee from QSC says that the attenuators (I'm assuming on his power amps, but he did post it in a thread regarding the Crown XLS1000 so he may mean power amps in general) are in between the input and output stage, and that they're not input attenuators like many believe (which if they were would vary the input sensitivity). Does anyone know if the "Gain (Level) Controls" on the Crown XLS1000 are for the input or after?

When you go to bridge mode, input 2 is disconnected, only input 1 is active.

You can't just use a Y connector to combine 2 outputs into 1 input. You need some sort of mixer or circuit to blend them.

The technical term for it is "bad". You're risking your preamps by combining their outputs into one input. Even though you physically are linking the input channels. That won't hurt the inputs of the power amp. The problem is merging 2 different voltage sources (preamp outputs) directly by doing so.

Like the QSC, they are not input attenuators.

There may be a buffer circuit between the inputs and the attenuator, but it works the same as an input attenuator would, just slightly later in the circuit.

I would think most input attenuators on preamps also have a circuit before the actual attenuator, a buffer to keep the impedance higher than the potentiometer would be if it was connected direct to the input jack.

It's sort of like in the Ghostbusters movie, you can't cross cross the streams. It's not like they were worried that it would blow Gozer into annihilation, they were more worried about what would happen to them.

K, I just came in from doing about 5 hours of lawn work and I'm exhausted, so sorry if I'm a little confused, does this mean it attenuates before the input or after?

Reason I ask is because I've read very contradictory information. I've read some people say to have the Crown's attenuators on full, and adjust the volume with the level on the preamp. While on the Crown's website itself it says the opposite, to have the preamp just below clipping, and then adjust the volume on the Crown's attenuators. I would think the latter would be true, and it's also the one that I wish to follow, but that would be right if the attenuators are after the input. The former would be correct if they are input attenuators right?
 
A general rule of thumb is that if a power amp has balanced inputs, the gain controls are not "input attenuators." (Attenuators on a balanced input would be expensive to do properly.) So there is an active input section before the pots. As a result, even with them turned down you can possibly overload the input section with enough signal voltage, though it's probably very unlikely.

Even if the amp has only unbalanced inputs, it's also likely that the gain pots aren't input attenuators.
