Cryonics

A thread I just read on oddball wiki topics, and the mention of cryonics specifically, prompted me to create this thread. I am fascinated with the concept, and in the past I went through a period of doing mounds of research on the topic. It started as ethical research, as I was an undergrad Psych Major, which led into just reading all I could out of pure fascination with the possibilities.

I'm curious what the TBOT'ers have to say about the whole cryonic preservation thang. Do you think it's impossible, crazy-talk, a money-making scheme, etc.? I'd love to start a full-on discussion about it. So, share what ya got! :)

For those of you who aren't familiar, HERE'S a pretty good wiki article on cryonics...

depends on how "dead" we really are "dead" after we are dead, even tho we are not or never "completely dead".

question is, would it even be possible to restore yourself?

I know seeds can grow into plants even if they are some thousand years old.

As far as my understanding of the human being goes, esoteric traditions indicate that the human spirit and soul separate from the body after death along with the vital forces which sustain us. There is no scientific proof for this, but not everything can be measured with our senses or thought of with our mind.
So through my understanding, the best they will be able to do, is get a human or animal to be on life support, with the same function and consciousness of an ultra dependent plant.

The maternal side of my family refers to the simplified polish answer: dead is dead.
But if our personalities/memories/etc. are stored in our brains in a matter that does not require ongoing life to survive, can they not be preserved for later reanimation? I compare it to a computer hard drive. It can sit in a desk drawer for years with no power supply, etc. yet, when it's hooked back up all the information remains. At least, that's the way I'd like to believe it.

they also say that generally a hard drive has a five year lifespan........

Just bury yourself in the snow.

Ah, the good life. Cryonics, I'm waiting!

It's also been discussed that in a couple of decades we may be able to back are brains up onto computers where we virtually live forever using the harddrive as our new external body... This makes me shudder as eternal life seems 1000x worse than death, especially if there's no way out like someone forgetting about you (the hard drive).

the water in frozen cells expands and causes mitochondria to burst. so you'd have to be freeze dried i'd take.

Like sea monkeys
The hope is that a means to freeze/thaw will be developed that truly minimizes cell damage. The problem is, cells of different types freeze differently. What works for certain types of cells could wreak havoc on others, from what I've read.
