Curiosity: Loverboy Bassist Scott Smith - gear?

I know he wasn't any sort of *amazing* bass player, but I am curious as to the rig, and the bass in particular that Scott Smith of Loverboy played/used to record. His lines are simple and fun, stand out in the mix, and easy to teach to beginners. I grew up in the 80's and had an unhealthy appreciation for Loverboy's music before discovering other rock bands like Def Leppard, etc. I've not been able to find any info on it anywhere. They were my first concert, I seem to recall from the concert and some videos that the headstock looked Fender-ish. Anyone know for sure? RIP Scott.

Ha! They were my first rock concert, too, with Quiet Riot opening!

I have a memory of a video in my head of him playing something Warwick/Spectorish, but I can't recall what he played when I saw the band live. And I know nothing of the amps he used. He did have a nice tone that worked with the guitar and keys heavy mix.

Weird that his death certificate listed him as "lost at sea."

Well this wasn't Scott Smith's rig because the pic is from 2009 when I saw Loverboy at an outdoor festival. But the bass player, Ken Sinnaeve was using this impressive looking and sounding Markbass rig:

I teched for Scott on the road and a bit in the studio for about six months in mid 1988. I don't recall what amp he was using other than it was a solid state rack system with a 4x12 cab.

A Stuart Spector bass with what was fundamentally a P Bass pickup in a custom housing was his main instrument and he carried an almost identical spare and a pink Kubicki that he never used live but did play in the studio....during the 5 or 6 months I worked for him I played that Kubicki more than he did. He strung everything with Rotosound Swing Bass 66 45-105 which he changed every other day on the main bass and every week on the spares. I remember being extremely popular with all the friends I passed those used sets on to.

Sorry I can't remember more but a lot of water's gone under the bridge since those days. Scotty was a good player and a helluva nice guy...he actually tried to give me the Kubicki once when he was drunk but I didn't take advantage. That's a bass I wish I had now though.

Never saw them live. If you go to Ken Sinnaeve's website he has a Scott Smith-owned Spector Bass which he carries in his arsenal now. Agree with the assessment of his bass cutting through on the mix and mixing up his lines enough to make his playing/the songs more interesting.
The lost at sea is my understanding of his untimely demise. Similar to Nathalie Wood, I guess.
