Custom Title, and Avatar Sizing

How does one change the status or avatar caption? This is the short blurb that goes with one's avatar. I'm not sure what that is called, actually.

Also, I can't move my current avatar around where the entire image is displayed. I'm currently using my traditional Thanksgiving one, but I can't get the entire Turklops into the frame - the very top of the head or bottom foot are getting cut off. How do you make the entire image fit into the avatar frame?

Using @beaglesandbass as an example, "Think first, then post?" is the avatar caption. I don't see any way to change it. I've been able to do both things in the past, but not now.

Thanks, Was. In the dialog box where you select your avatar, it says that you can resize and reposition, but I can only reposition- not resize or crop. I did edit the Turklops JPG to change the size to be less than 400x400 pixels, but it still doesn't want to fit into the avatar frame.

Do you know anything about the avatar caption? I see you don't currently have one, either. I read somewhere that you have to be at least a supporting member of Talkbass to have one of those, and I am, but I still don't see where it is that that caption is set.

If @beaglesandbass or some other TB mod doesn't check in, I guess I'll just get through the week with my one-footed Turklops.. wouldn't be the end of the world.

Try clicking on your avatar to the right of the TB.com logo at the top of the page, then click your avatar again.

I did my avatar in paint. From what I remember, I experimented with canvas size till it fit. I opened the source file and the image properties are 2.44"x2.44" or 234x234 pixels.

If I open the image for editing from TB it's even smaller 192x192 pixels. If I open your avatar for editing its 192x192.

I haven't added a signature or status or profile banner. I believe the element you are calling a caption may be one of these.

It's a "Forum enhancement" feature available to supporting membership.

My Got Cluck was added while I was a supporting member.

Here is a part of the account upgrade feature list :
"Custom User Title - Signature Colors/Fonts - Username Changes (5x) - Exclusive Forum Access"

Custom User Title is what he's looking for and calling caption.

However, I still can't get the Turklops to fit in the space for the avatar. This is even after sizing it to 200x200. Will keep trying.

Tried 150x150, no go. I also tried 450x450, as the avatar selection dialog box suggests "at least 400x400". No matter what size the image is, it still ends up cropped when it displays.

Below is a screen capture of the dialog for changing the avatar. I can drag the image up and down in the gold box, but I can't resize it or do anything to fix the autocropping.

It'd be nice to get a Talkbass mod in on this who knows how the autocrop process works.

Okay, mystery solved. The original image was already cropped closely to the Turklops image. I edited the JPG to add 20 pixels or so of white space all around the image. Apparently the Talkbass auto-crop gets thrown off when the avatar image desired runs all the way to the edges of the "canvas", vs. having some identifiable white or empty space around it.

I think I figure it out. I experimented with a Turklops I found online. First I resized and cropped to 192x192 and it worked fine. I did it a second time with the vertical at 192 and the horizontal around 142. This caused the same problem you are having. I went back and expanded the horizontal so the background was 192x192 and now the complete image is presented in the frame..

So I believe the program references and resizes the image based on the width. If the width is narrower than the vertical dimension, some of the vertical is pushed out of the frame.

I resized the image to 400x400 and it still loaded fine.

It's possible the image loader analyzes the image and may reference either the vertical or horizontal. The key is it only appears to consider one of them at a time.

Pretty sure I had a similar problem when I made my avatar.

For the record, in case it isn't clear from the above posts, the custom title is set in a user's account details. Click on your user name on the TB nav bar at the top of the screen, and you'll drop this menu down:

In account details, look for Custom Title: "If specified, this will replace the title that displays under your name in your posts." Enter your custom title there.
