cutting through the mix

hey all just a quick question... but first a bit of background on my situation.

so i play a 6 string in a prog metal band. now, im normally used to using a pick and being heard through the mix quite clearly but im trying to stray away from using them because i prefer my hands because i feel more like a bass player that way. the only thing is now im not heard as well through the mix. are there some eq'ing i should try out? i normally run things flat on my eden wt800 going to a peavey 810. i dont like to use effects. i just want to be heard clearly!

It's great that you want to learn a new technique but "PLEASE" don't feel like you need to play with fingers to feel like a bass player. A good "MUSICIAN" will use whatever is available to get the desired sound. If a pick works then use it!

+1 Nothing wrong with a pick at all. If your finger style isn't cutting through, boost your EQ at around 250hz. That will add a nice growly cut to your sound.

Boost your mids in general to help cut through. If you miss the aggressiveness of the pick, focus on high-mids especially.

I like to cut the low lows a bit (40-80hz), crank the master more. Bump around 180-100hz.

Dial in a slightly harsh midrangey tone and it will probably sound fine in the mix.

Some good pedals for presence are the Sansamp BDDI and the similar (cheaper) Hartke VXL.
