D'Addario Chromes...first impressions

IMG_0896Medium.jpg

Got any pics of the whole bass? Nice! Must sound great with the Chromes.

Sundogue - After reading your earlier post "confessions" i decided to get myself a set of chromes and after being a roundwound guy i gotta say the chromes are fantastic.. When i first put them on they were quite bright but after about a month now they are coming into their own man.. Reallly thumpy and yeh you're right - in the live situation they sit absolutely perfect in the mix.. Quite astounded really..

So yeh thanks Sundogue - For now i am a convert - i am sure there will be some situations where i might miss the zing of new rounds but for now absolutely loving the Chromes and would suggest for anyone sitting on the fence as i was - get yourself some chromes man - Rocking strings

Cheers

Yeah, I just posted in the "Confessions" thread about the brightness of Chromes.

For a flat they are very bright, yet unlike a roundwound they will last forever. I have a year old set on and after mucho extensive playing over that year they are still just about as bright as the day I put them on. Want a comparison to rounds? I switched back to rounds twice in this past year (why I don't know) and in less than a month switched back to the Chromes. The old Chromes were brighter than the newer rounds I took off. Both times my old Chromes were brighter than roundwounds that had less than a month of playing time!

Yes, they don't have quite that sizzling top end of a roundwound, but they more than make up for it with that midrange bright punch in a live mix.

Every time you think you want to go back to rounds, think how that roundwound sound only lasts a short time before you have to buy new $tring$. Chromes are the Energizer bunny of bass strings. :D

Hahahahh - sucker for punishment??

Couldn't agree more - Different world really.. And to be honest I was a bit sceptical where in your previous post you mentioned about the bass being in its own sorta "sonic space", in fact thats what made me buy a set. I was intrigued. And i gotta say Sundogue its hard to describe really but you're absolutely right man.. Its like the bass exists all on its own way down at the bottom, underneath everything else. Fantastic.. :hyper:

Futhermore I will not say that I will never put another set of rounds on.. Cos i am sure at some stage I'll want some high end zing down the line, but pretty sure Chromes will be on for a long while to come. Its the fundamentals that they do so well man. Mindblowing..

In fact gonna consider next time trying different brands and experiment a bit - I think you rated the TI jazz flats quite highly too... Anyway another time lol.

Go well ppl :bassist:

I've played most flats over the last 15 years, on different types of J's, P's and Rays. What I have found (or at least convinced myself of) is that the Chromes are excellent on my Jazz basses, but a little "lacking" on a P. And Labella 760's are everything I want on a P, but just a little too dark on a jazz. I truly like Chromes on a jazz.

I'm just about to put a set of Chromes on my Squier VM Jazz...do you have any issues with neck tension? the flats seem to have 10-20 lbs more tension per string (compared to rounds) according to the D'Addario website.

I have had chromes medium gauge (50-105) on both my VM fretless and my 70's VM. No issues at all with neck tension.

Good Luck!

Never had any issues with the tension of Chromes. Some others- Fenders, Roto flats, yes, particularly on real narrow neck J's.
