D'Addario Defect

I recently purchased two sets of D'Addario EXL170 strings for my stock '68 P-Bass. In both sets, the E string (0.100 inches) taper is way off. The string should taper between the nut and tuner of course, but these E strings taper around the 3rd fret! Has anyone else received similarly defective strings from D'Addario?

Ordered a set of chromes online, the taper on the G started middle of first position.
Bought another set locally that was fine. I got in touch w/ them via their website to return them, and after second e mail asking for a ship to address(replacement was authorized,) they quit responding, guess they thought I was not legit.
I dig the strings, but I have no idea how they survive with this kind of customer care.
I thought my set was a fluke, but seems more common than that.

Have you purchased the right length? Those strings come in multiple lengths. I would talk to the person who you bought the strings from, they could help you.

Yes, I surely purchased the right length - EXL170 long scale. They're designed for a 34" scale, so they should fit my P-Bass perfectly. It's quite strange, because the A, D, and G strings are fine. Only the E strings are improperly tapered.
