Double Bass D'Addario Zyex

(in a really fast voice) "Possible side effects of ZYEX include; nausea, blurred vision, headaches, disorientation, flatulence, prolonged priapism, projectile vomiting, murderous intent, or unexplained embracing of the Tea Party. Do not operate a vehicle containing a bass strung with ZYEX. If you experience a bass solo lasting longer than four minutes, consult your union rep immediately".

I see you glossed right over the little difficulty with 'anal leakage'! :D

I wish I'd said that. Damn,You be the man.
Problem is, I experience some of these side effects with most strings:eek:

my bass has been strung with zyex for about two months now. don't ask how i got them ;)

as for a review, i dont feel like the right candidate to write one. it's only the second set ive tried with my bass (the first set being spiro E&A with pirazzi G&D). personally, i like the strings. the tension feels good, they are very warm. they sound excellent when played arco. but as far as comparing them to other strings, im of no use.

very cool!
sometimes I get a little frustrated, especially on the BG side, with people giving advice and sharing their opinion on stuff that they haven't even tried!

I bought a set, haven't put on yet because I didn't want to right before some gigs. I may get to it this week though. I have the box in hand and on the box it says all are Zyex core, and the A & E are Tungsten wound, The G is Titanium wound and the the D string is stainless steel Wound, why, I wouldn't know. An attempt to balance feel I suppose. I was intrigued by the description because I've had success with D'Addario hybrids but always thought they sort of responded lethargically rather quickly (on my bass), so i wanted to try these. As soon as i try them, I'll throw out an opinion.

did they have the obligato roll? id consider comparing them to obligato to be a negative review... (but thats just me) how do they compare to Evah Pirazzi ?

Hi, I've used two sets on different basses. Both basses were louder after installing the Zyex strings. They feel very much like the Obligato strings but are brighter. Both classical and Jazz players liked them. Definitely worth a try.

I was able to try them at Bass2010 at Berlin (by the way: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]) last week. They hadn't the Obligato roll. They felt much stiffer than the Obligatos, but the string action was higher than I use to play. So I may be wrong.
Soundwise, I can't say anything specific ... not my bass, and just some few minutes of playing.

Tried these on a friend's bass the other night. They sounded pretty nice under the bow as well as pizz. Plenty of presence, and they're a bit like EPs/Dominants.. I thought they sounded a little darker (especially compared to Dominants) and maybe slightly smoother than EPs (smoother might not be the right word, but you know that very faint "scratchy" sound hybrids like EPs have under the bow? Zyex didn't quite have that). Slightly more tension than EPs/Dominants, too, but still had the feel of a hybrid string. When it comes time to get new strings I may well consider these.

I have had a set of Zyex on my ply for a couple of weeks. They are by far the loudest strings I have had on this particular bass(I've had Helicore Hybrids, Spiro Orch, Spiro Solo, Innovation Honey). Nice strings. Similar to EP's tonally, but a little less dark. They bow very well, but not quite as well as Evahs. I have yet to play this bass on a gig, so I'll post my thoughts after my gig tomorrow...

Interesting results, considering their violin and viola counterparts are some of the warmest, softest, and lowest volume strings I've ever played on. To make them sound good you'd have to have the brightest instrument ever made.

Seems the bass strings are polar opposite.

Just put them on today-I got the "Light" gauge. I've been trying to find some strings that won't kill my fingers while I come back from a 3 month layoff. They feel pretty good so far. I agree w/ Adrian re volume and bow feel. I have a Gamut G and D coming and will be interested to see how well they and the Zyex A and E work as a set.

Given what I've read on this forum, no matter what string you look at, similar variances tend to occur depending upon the instrument. Basses tend to require more focused sound and higher pitched instruments tend to require more warm sounds. That aside, these Zyex strings look interesting and I'd like to see how this product plays out in the long term.
