Is there something about the quality of the overdrive that made the original pedal special? Or did it have more to do with its versatility?
It just sounds amazing and you can get a lot of tones from it. I love mine and if I were looking for a great overdrive that can deliver a massive amopunt of low end and also sound good and articulate but in a smaller package, I'd go for this. But I already have the version one and I don't plan to get rid of it in the near future.
I’m working with a Pike Vulcan XL as my overdrive/preamp. It makes me pretty happy, but I’m a sucker for variability. I’d love to hear one of these.
I was hoping for a brighter MBD-1, but even if it's not I will probably try it again at some point. When I received mine, it was against my Alpha-Omega but I always used my Alpha-Omega with a brighter overdrive/eq in front of it for extra clank.
Now I use a brighter overdrive in front of my Oxford(YYZ) and it's my favorite sound thus far. I think the MBD-1 had a lot of qualities I like about my Oxford, so I'll likely try it again, esp in the smaller enclosure size. I'm curious about what the +20db would do at "low-gain" as well.

Is it just an MBD-1 in a smaller enclosure, or is it significantly different?

It's a straight-ahead overdrive/distortion pedal for bass. No significant tone coloration. Yes, versatility is the key: it'll do OD, distortion, and even get kinda fuzzy with the Depth knob turned up. Speaking of Depth, this pedal delivers all the bottom end you want and more. Also, the lowpassed clean blend is brilliant.
I love that the controls behave exactly as you expect, with smooth response. We've all encountered pedals where certain knobs only work well within a narrow range, and are hypersensitive: a tiny tweak results in a big change. Not the case here. My version 1 MBD-1 (no internal trim) works great with passive and active basses, but the gain switch will make it even more versatile.
