Dancehall synth tone

Hola,

I just recently got to check out "Bannanas at Large" in the CA Bay Area and their awesome collection of boutique stompboxes and took note of all the bass synth and octave pedals that are out there.
I was curious where exactly this kinda Dancehall Reggae tone comes from and if I could simulate it from a synth pedal (EHX Micro, Octavius Squeezer...) or an octave pedal ... here's some examples:

The synth pedals I've seen so far focus a lot on the "envelope" which I don't think is really happening in this tone, but it doesn't seem like an octave pedal really sounds like that either...

I think the clip of the 311 outro/medley is the best example of the sound I'm thinking of... Moog Taurus?

I'm pretty sure its a ring modulator, one with a blend knob. Check out the frequency analyzer by electro harmonix. It might me be heavily compressed/gated with that.

Nice - I wouldn't have thought that it could be a ring modulator.

I've actually got a DOD "Gonkulator" packed away in a box somewhere so I'll try it out.

actually there is a thread on here about pnut's pedal board. He uses the mxr blue box and i think that's what he is using. Im interested in this type of tone myself, it sounds like a fuzzy square wave to me.

Blue box??! I thought he had pretty much just a big muff and nothing else - haven't really paid much attention to his gear and I thought it was just one of Nick's software synths, tho. The Blue Box sounds, well, very trashy and positively shatty on guitar, in a good way, from my experience.
Anyways, I just found out about this!
