Dark repeats

Looking for a second delay to run before my Akai Headrush. I want dark repeats so I'm just wondering what's out there.

It needs to be MXR sized (or smaller) and be less than £120 ($190).

Modulation would be a bonus but not important at all.

Any ideas?

You can't get much more MXR sized than an MXR Carbon Copy! Either that or an EHX Memory Toy (not sure how dark the repeats are though) or a used Malekko Dark.

I chose the Memory Toy over the Carbon Copy. Tone wise they were in the same ballpark, and the feature set is identical. Saved a few bucks. Either will give you the darker sound, more so with the mod switch engaged (it's fairly subtle to my ears).

Seriously though, I tried searching and it didn't come up with anything specific about dark delays.

And yes...completely forgot about the CC...fail much?

I might check out the Memory Toy if I can.

I personally didn't like the Memory Toy's character at all, but that's me. It's definitely a different flavor of delay than the CC.

The Malekko 616 is another option worth checking out. I sold mine to cover moving costs but I really dug it.

With a step up in price comes the Maxon AD-9 and a used Malekko Ekko 600 Dark both of which are great delays though I which the Maxon had a longer max time.

And if you want to go a bit more boutique, for $199 the Wampler Analog Echo is an MXR sized hybrid delay and sounds fantastic, at least when I tried it on guitar. It doesn't have modulation but I liked its basic delay character better than the CC or 616. Plus it has a tone knob to give you more flexibility on the sound of the repeats.

To me the Memory Toy sounded more lo-fi with the Carbon Copy being both warmer and clearer by a noticeable amount. That's how I heard it anyway. If it is what the OP wants though, the Memory Toy DOES do dark repeats.

Just saw the request for the 616 to be included. The problem there is that I DID directly A/B the CC and Memory Toy (albeit in-store) but while I owned both the MXR and Malekko I didn't have them at the same time. But to my ear the Malekko is a bit brighter but both have a nice analog delay character to them. If it matters, the Malekko has better (IMO) and a much wider range of modulation and the Carbon Copy is much better at self-oscillating and the Malekko gets far too shrill and chirpy for my tastes.

Plus you can get the Memory Toy for £52 new over here, which is a proper bargain! Cheapest MXR Carbon Copy you'll find is £115 in the UK.

The Jack Deville Dark Echo sounds like it could be perfect and it's very close to your price range ($200).

I'll +1 the Memory Toy. I really dig mine. It is pretty dark (at least when compared to most other delays I've used) in a really nice way. It isn't dark in a muddy way at all; just soft, smooth and deep repeats. I know people have had issues with them but I have yet to run into a problem. For $80 I think it was quite a deal.

Ummmm....Malekko Ekko 600 Dark if you can find one used, since I think they are discontinued. I love mine a lot!
