Dark Star(Hammon) pickup question

I have an original Hammon Dark Star pickup that came out of a Lakland 44-64 P-bass. I believe this is a DS-3 with 18mm pole spacing. The pickup has an "S" marked on the bar magnets.Does anyone know what that "S" stands for? Thanks.

If it is towards one end, perhaps 'South', for polarity purposes?

That's it. Fred marked the pickups S or N. If you wanted a humbucking pair you needed S and N.

Thanks for the info on that...I have someone interested in buying it and I wanted to try and confirm.After reading up about matched pairs I thought that might be the reason for the S and N designation.
