Big fan of Darryl Jones, but only saw Miles with Marcus.

I love this tune and record. A top one for me. Love playing this bassline as well, it's such a nice groove.

I've been playing the "Techno" bassline ever since Guitar Player or Bass Player mag included a transcription in their Darryl Jones issue. It's definitely an endurance-challenge! I would love to play that tune in a band -- because, even cooler than the bassline/groove imho is that melody! ho. lee. crap what a piquant sequence of note choices! -- but it's probably been ~40 years since I've been in a band with a guitarist who has the chops and the confidence to take that tune on.

I recently came across a Miles Davis live clip on youtube where they were playing "Tutu" and it was an odd band: Definitely Darryl Jones on bass (and man was he killin' it!) but everyone else was from a slightly later period: Adam Holzman and Robert Irving III on keys, Mino Cinelu (sp?) on percussion, Foley on piccolo bass... Did Darryl ever go back and sub for Benny Reitveld maybe?

It’s a tricky line but remember that Jones uses a compressor/sustainer pedal which makes it a little easier on the right hand. Also the trick on the left hand is to use index and pinky and roll it up from the G# to the C#.

I know a few guys who are up to the task of playing the leads. They are such heady parts, Scofield is a beast.

At some point I may out together a quartet and cover tracks like this while also writing our own.

I missed seeing Darryl with Miles but did catch the band with Benny. Not this show, but the same lineup.

BTW, I still use the compound word miles was famous for when I can get away with it, because in my neck of the woods growing up that was called "vocabulary".

Such a great tune and record. This was one of several Sco tunes we played in a band for a few years.
