I was in row F, so I figured I'd get a pretty good balance. The more I think about it, it seemed like the reverb on the drums took away the kick, yet still muddied the mix. There was a ton of feedback throughout the show, too. When I saw the Final Fantasy show at the Orpheum (rock band and full orchestra) a couple of years ago, the sound was much better balanced.
The bass player was playing a fender jazz fiver (beautiful red instrument btw), and from what I could tell spent most of the night playing down on the B string. I left feeling stronger about my "no five-string" rule, because I wanted to hear the bass as well as feel it. It just lived so low in the mix that I couldn't differentiate it from the kit.
You missed a great performance though. Simultaneously polished and gritty. I guess that has been Daryl's "Blue-eyed soul" m.o. from the start. So glad I got to see him live.
