Dave Hungate - no website? but got a personal response, great guy!

I'm curious, does David Hungate not have any sort of official website or contact page on the internet?

For such a prolific bassist, there is so little about him on line. I was working on his bassline from the Greese soundtrack "you're the one I love" written by John Ferrar and was curious what type of bass he played on that sound track.. My assumption is Fender P-bass, but I was hoping to see if there was some sort of on-line resource...

thanks, I got it... he's accepting followers and I sent him a message (not sure he'll get it).. I'm surprised he's not doing how own website, but then when you're basically the white Jamerson, maybe you just don't need one... ;)

There's a number of notable studio guys that don't have websites - Lee Sklar, Anthony Jackson, Abe Laboriel, Michael Rhodes, and Neil Steubenhaus come to mind. They established their reputations years before the Internet and it could be argued that they don't depend on direct contact with fans for their livelihood. That said, Sklar has an active FB himself.

would love to get Dave Hungate on here... just have to make sure he doesn't get banned for too many political posts. ;) looking at his FB page, he's quite involved in it... (no problem with that myself btw, but I know TB is a politics free zone)

Never gonna happen - guys at that level know the lay of the land here, and they talk to each other. Trust me on this....... :eek:

btw, I had send an email to his last band before re-joining Toto, a singer/songwriter by the name of April Barrows, and got a personal response back from her.. She told me that not only does she work with Dave but that she liked him so much she married him... That was cool!

Anyway, she said he's busy preparing for his Toto Euro tour but that she'll forward him my email and try and get me an answer...

Even his wikipedia article is lacking frankly...

he did.... I got the impression from reading the website that they had a decent (really good) bassist and so this gave Dave the chance at playing guitar.. Clearly, he's talented at many, many instruments, but I'm thinking the majority of his session work is for bass..

wow... how cool is that??? I just got a personal response from him, as his wife forwarded my question about which bass he used. I'm a little embarrassed as I referred to him as a "White Jamerson" and he clearly felt differently ;)

"You're the one that I want" was a '62 precision with Rotosounds and a pick. I was probably using my Versatone amp as well as a direct box.


I'm flattered to be referred to as "the white James Jamerson," and was called to back up James by Ben Barrett, Motown's contractor, a few times after he moved to L.A. and was having health problems. However the title truly belongs to my dear friend, the late Bob Babbitt who played on many R and B hits back in the day and whose playing is often mistaken for James.

That's VERY cool! He's going to do the tour following Toto's new album, which will be an opportunity to see him live if they do more dates here in the US. For the younger set that may be unaware, it's been the "cool" thing to hate Toto in the past, so they just made a killing touring the rest of the world besides the US.

On the Jamerson tip - for those who don't already have it, Hungate is also featured in the "Standing in the Shadows of Motown" book/CD.

I corresponded briefly with David about 30 years ago on Compuserve, before Internet access was widely available. I'd seen his name associated with a user ID, so I messaged him and asked if it was the same David Hungate that played with Toto. His response was, "Yes, that was me, but please don't hold it against me." I only exchanged a couple more messages with him after that, but he came across as a decent and very humble guy.
