Double Bass DB bassist you cant miss?

I have a beautiful duet recording between Davis and Freddie Hubbard called "Muses for Richard Davis."

Sorry to quote myself, but I am in the middle of a move and while going through my things, I found an original LP copy of Davis's "Divine Gemini" that I had forgotten about.

Chris & Sebastian might not be the most so-fist-i-cated bassists down here in DB land, but if someone gets enjoyment from it... it can't be wrong. They both inspire me to play!

i love chris woods playing on both electric and upright, can't wait to hear whats goin on with the new album that should be out soon.
also i have a recording of them playing at tonic a few years ago and they play an absolutely killer version of so long eric(mingus).

now, more on the topic at hand, i really dig reggie workman, paul chambers, ray brown, ron carter, dave holland, and stanley clarkes upright stuff...i'm a youngster though and need time to catch up with all the older guys in listening(and playing skill as well )

some of my favorites are:

Jazz guys:
-Ron Carter for walking, love the way he expands time with his feel and rythms. don't like his sound and his solos, but love to hear and play and imitate(try, very tricky indeed) his walking lines.
-marc johnson has some great melodical chops
-gary peacock is an interesting player
-stanley clarke: he is a great double bassit period. why did he took the electric bass.....

i'm an electric bassist myself.... i don't have a double bass yet. hopefully soon i'm gonna start lessons.

classical guys:
gary karr: i love his sound, and love "basso cantante", great record.
Renaud-Garcia fons:he plays a lot, i wolud really love to see videos of his playing....don't like his music too much, but i find him amazing
i have some Rabbath cds...and i really like some of the bach stuff he play..... but i feel his playing to be a bit...uhm cold... maybe a bit unemotional, but that's just me...

I agree he is amazing but I do like his music even more.

Interesting you like Karr but find Rabbath cold and unemotional. Hmm I have the opposite reaction.

If I am not mistaken, I did not see Edgar Meyer anywhere. He is something else............ I saw him on PBS one night doing several songs in a trio with Ray Brown and Victor Wooten. They brought the house down!

And Robert Hurst along with Reginald Veal. Hurst kills me!

Hey all, I was wondering what DB bassist's you could reccomend EVERY bassist should know of? (Get that?) Like almost all bassists know of Jaco Pastorius, alot know of Victor Wooten. So who is an "Essential" bassist that would help understand the Full capabilities and Scope of a DB bass?

The only player I have listened to is John Patituchi, But I have no idea what you guys think of him.

Check out Michel Donato. He has/had a duo with Karen Young that released a couple of recordings. He also has an album with Alain Caron called "Basse Double Basse". Definitely one of the most underrated bass players on the go. I chalk it up to him not joining big touring acts and staying in Montreal to make a living.

Joel Quarrington
A great Canadian bassist in the classical realm. He did a record of Bottesini music on Naxos (that is budget priced, by the way) that is pretty darn stunning. Tunes in 5ths, and has a gorgeous Maggini bass.

Thomas Martin
Now perhaps better known for making basses. London Symphony principal bass for many years. Also did some great Bottesini music on CD.

Dave Young
Canadian bassist that played with Oscar Peterson. There is a great box set of his duos with pianists like Oscar, Renee Rosnes, Tommy Flanagan, and Barry Harris. Great arco solos -was a classical bassist as well.

I almost forgot, Jim Vivian. He's a great player. If you're in Toronto and get a chance to see him play...do. His thumb position solos are breathtaking. Not to mention he can really lay it down.

Speaking of Tyrone Brown he has a new book of solo pieces for the bass available. I am using it with one of my students with great results.

I just got this today and it's fantastic. I asked Tyrone if I could have a lead sheet of one of his tunes and he sent the book/CD along with it! what a cat!
