Hi, glad to have found this tremendously informative forum! Last week I finally bought my first DB, a new 3/4 flatback Hora, after almost a year of soul searching; I had been playing piano (classical) for almost 20 years and never expected to fall so hard for another instrument, let alone another style of music (jazz, folk, bluegrass). I don't have a teacher and probably won't be going to one any time soon (I don't drive and the public transportation system here in Bucharest isn't likely to treat my DB very kindly); I even had to install the soundpost and bridge myself (no idea if the DB set up correctly; must find a luthier soon); hopefully there won't be any permanent injuries or damage.
