DB728 Troubles........Help Needed

I did talk with marc40a the day after I got back from Germany. I had two DEMO Aguilar DB-680 preamps. One had a "used" footswitch and that unit was sold. I sold the second unit to marc40a about a month or so later and he did call me about some tube issues with the unit. I offered for him to return this preamp, but was told that it was at Aguilar. My offer still stands to return the unit and I will gladly refund the shipping. Just give me a call.

John Files

The day I purchased it is the day the ad "w/ the footswitch" was reposted on bassgear.

I didn't call or email anyone at the Emporium about the output issue. I just called Aguilar on the day the pre arrived and sent it straight out them same day.

I only emailed/called about the footswitch. The output issue was mentioned after the proposed solution to the footswitch quandry was to send the preamp back for a refund.

Whoa, I must have skimmed over this post before. I have no affiliation or connection with Bass Emporium whatsoever, but I have bought several things from John, including my DB 728 and the foot controller for my DB 680. He has always offered excellent customer service (based upon my experiences, which were mostly over the phone/internet). It sounds like some breakdown in the communication between the two of you. I hope that if you both can talk it through, that you will be happy with the end result.

Again, I have no 'special relationship' with Bass Emporium or John Files, but since your experience was so different from mine, I'd like to propose the notion that he is not, in fact, a cockroach, and that that perhaps you two just got your wires a bit crossed. I mean, a guy who owns and operates a bass-only store that does most of its business over long distance isn't going to risk potentially ruining his reputation over a freakin' foot pedal!

Just my two cents. I hope you can resolve your situation amicably.

Tom.
I'm sure many have people have had smooth transactions with the BE. What prompted my post was the striking similiarity with g4string's experience: A product that required service on arrival and the feeling that you've been told a story.

OK,

Based on some extensive research here at TB, I replaced the power tubes with Sovtek KT88's . I also replaced the input driver with a Tung-Sol 12AX7 and the phase divider with a JJ 12AU7. I reset the bias and now the amp sounds like it should. I am running the gain at 2:30 on the 728 and about 12:00 on the Demeter (also replaced those tubes with Tung-Sol 12AX7's). I am not breaking up at all. I did check the Demeter when I chaged the tubes for a internal trim pot. It had one, although it was set in the middle position at 12:00. Thanks for all of the help everybody, especially JGR for the info on biasing my amp and James Hart for all of the info you had posted about the KT88's (even though your info I found in another thread via the search function).

wow, your bias was way off - i can imagine what an improvement it made! good thing you checked!

if you think one 728 is loud, i got a pair of em for ya with a pair of 4x12's!!!
