The 4th string is the E string, i assume you mean the 1st string, the G string?
Also, i think you mean .048, .48 is half an inch thick =)
.048 for G is fairly high tension, medium-heavy.

Some folks do heavy strings. Not me. I hate heavy strings. The lighter and more flexible the better.
