Hey all! Just wondering on the metal side for you guys that play fretless or even jazz fusion style
Do you guys use flats for your basses? Or risk the chewing of the fretboard and use rounds or stainless steels?
Do flats cut through the mix well enough or is that more of an EQ thing?

The Steve Harris flats might be OK. Flats are not known for their mids, which is what gets you through a thick heavy mix. If you are worried about your fret board, you could try KS compressors ot GHS Pressure wound. They are as slick as you can go without losing the mid overtones.

Some flats have more mids than others, though. TIs and Sadowsky black label flats are rareky buried in the mix.

Not DM but I do play heavy hard rock and use Chromes with a deluxe active Jazz. Decent amount of cut and clank when hit hard.

If you want to use flats I suggest Chromes, they have a superb attack, powerful sound with great mids and in real world more defined than roundwounds in the mix. I usually go back and forth, flats or roundwounds, I like the flats sound sometimes, other times the rondwounds becouse they sound sweeter. You can hear something here with flats...
