Debarge "I Like It" Flats of Rounds?

"Ready" Freddie Washington played bass on this song? I've always thought it was one of the Debarge brothers.
I was gonna say flats based on the sound from about 1:00 to 1:25, but then there's a little slap segment that rings too much for flats....gotta be rounds or very bright SS flats.
You are witnessing the sound of a p-bass with flats Eq'ed high on the upper mids with some compression there boss, F'n Classic tone right there.

Kinda funny listening to that track and hearing how many rap groups pulled samples from that song.. this has got to be like one of the most sampled songs ever..
I'm thinking that as well. The chorus section has a totally different vibe and I'm hearing the growly sound of (well worn) rounds on a P-Bass.
I had the incredible fortune of watching Freddy record and we discussed this album and others - he said it was not him on this song, he was on another session for this specific song date. I believe it was Ken Wild on "I Like It."
I'm also guessing p bass with flats, but it's quite bright. Jamming along with my jazz bass/old hi beams I'm really not that far off.
More importantly, what a track! Never heard this before. The bass tone is great, it's mixed plenty loud, and playing is excellent. The song is quite catchy as well.

Randy DeBarge is credited on bass. Not sure why I suggested it was Freddie Washington.

You were correct, DWBass, Freddie played bass on that album as well. Freddie did tell me that he played on a bunch of tracks on that album, just not on "I Like It." Randy and Ken are credited on the album, too. I sent an email to Ken Wild - maybe he'll clear up the mystery...!

I'm guessing roundwounds as well. Outboard gear plays a big part, too. I try to ask session players what outboard gear they remember utilizing. For instance, Freddie says they used a DBX 160 as a compressor on "Forget Me Nots." Hopefully, Ken gets back to me. If Randy (or Tommy) did play on this cut - could they using a BC Rich?
