For what it’s worth I would give you an “A+” for effort; you keep trying and trying but I'm afraid the enlightenment that comes with actual experience will never trump the stereotyped and endlessly regurgitated internet myths regarding tube/transistor, slow/fast, clear/warm comparisons.

Know what galls me the most, Ed? How quickly people are these days to place credit or blame for their sound on the gear they use. It will be a sorry day that I blame a working rig for crap sound. Sure, I love my Ampeg amps and Fender basses, but if all Ampeg amps and Fender basses were to disapear tomorrow, I would still carry on just as I have for the past 35 years, and I'd still sound pretty much exactly like I do now. I only use Ampegs and Fenders because they make the process of finding the sounds I like a lot easier. But make no mistake...tone comes from the player, and if the tone is bad, it ain't the gear's fault. I'll even make a Behringer rig sound good if I have to.

No one is blaming the sound on the manufacturer - most bass players worth their salt can get a myriad of sounds from whatever amp they use. As an owner of both Ampeg and GK for many moons, I'm only giving my unbiased opinion. Sorry if I offended any diehard Ampeg fans, but after 25 years in the clubs I know if I have a gig or sit in w/ a funk R&B band I'll choose my GK rig 10 times out of 10 and if I am going to jam some southern or classic rock, I bring the Ampeg. Not the gears fault or what my perception of the sound is. If Ampeg was the "be all to end all" bass sound - there wouldn't be as many options out there or as many great bassists playing other gear - they would all play Ampeg.

That's my $.02 for what it's worth to the OP!

25+ years (most of them w/ Ampeg gear) is all the experience I need. I don't buy into internet myths or try to perpetuate them. But that's fine if YOU see it that way...

It is so not about Ampeg. Or GK. It's more about pigeonholing gear into little boxes from which there is no escape. I can dig the idea that you use two different rigs depending on the type of music you play because you feel one suits the music better than the other. What I can't get into is the idea that one amp can't do what the other does. I've played many a rock gig using rented GK stuff and it was great. I've also played lots of R&B/funk on Ampegs and it was also great. I do like Ampeg stuff way better than GK but that's a matter of personal taste, not an indication of its lack of capabilities.
