Double Bass Deglossing Finish

I followed the directions in the newbies link and just finished taking off the glossy finish on my Engelhardt (the entire bass, not just the neck). My question is should I now apply some kind of protective oil (Watco Danish or boiled linseed) or leave it alone. By the way, this makes a huge difference in the appearance if you dislike that high Engelhardt shine like I did.

You removed ALL of the finish? Why? What did you use to remove the finish? The object of de-glossing the bass is to abrade the existing finish, but leave it intact...

Just the high gloss, not the entire finish. Sorry for the confusion. I wanted to dull the gloss so I followed the directions found in the newbie section. The look is much better without the shine.

Gotcha - you had me worried that you had created (and already done) a helluva lot more work for yourself than necessary. What you've done is simply introduce a fine scratch pattern into the surface of the finish, killing the gloss. These scratches do not go through the finish down to the substrate, i.e. the wood... Being that the finish is still fully intact, you do not need to put anything on the bass to 'protect' it.

The pic in my avatar was a product of procrastination during an "actual" photo shoot years back during a project for a photo class. Ironically, this project-unrelated pic was the one of the set that went on to win some minor-league honors in the mid-'90s. Yes, it's a flaming plunger.
