delay on bass?

I have a boss dd6 ive been using with guitar, next time i practice with my band im definitly gonna give it a shot see if it delay gives me what im looking for... ive really been wanting to switch the dd6 out for a carbon copy... if this works then it will give even more excuse to get a new toy...

Keep in mind, there are two distinct types of delay - digital and analog. They sound very different. Your plan is to switch from digital to analog. Just make sure you are prepared for the different tone.

MY GOD, that thing with the Screamin' Demon, the SM200, and the delay pedal sounds fantastic!!! Would be even cooler with some analog delay...thanks for the food for thought, bro!!

as many have said, delay is great for ambient stuff, and can double as reverb.

"the carpenter and the dainty bride" by primus starts off with pretty awesome delay action that i would not consider ambient, at least not as much as tool.

i also liked the boss dd7. its not too pricey and it sounds great.

Delay sounds wonderful on bass.

In my taste: delay is for bass, reverb is for guitarts... at least that's what I've been trying to convince my guitarist of.

I use delay mainly for mellower passages.
A short digital delay is also coul to use almost constantly.


Yesterday I played around with my DL-4, had some fun with the Tube Echo (Echoplex EP-1 tube tape delay modelling), very crisp and organic sound.
Now I want a real tape echo.

I love having a slight overdrive and a delay for slow powerful parts. Really gives a great feeling if done right.

Pink Floyd's "One of These Days" is a prime use of a delay...

...as is the intro to Pink Floyd's "Another Brick In The Wall." Rather dramatic actually, pretty clever. That's how I would try to use it on one of my tracks, if I could do it without sounding like a copy-cat.

It has the same zeros behind it over here... except a € behind it instead of a $.

I had one.
Wasn't bad, but I sold it because it wasn't quite my taste. Too dark.
The vibrato was very cool on it.

I'm very fond now of the Malekko Echo 300 Bright.

That's what I love about it. I like a delay in super emotional/powerful parts and that dark delay with the chorus just does it for me.

i haved used analog delay on guitar and prefer it to digital, so im assuming that the same would apply to bass...

I pretty much have everything on my board except for a ring mod, delay, and tremolo. If I was going to change anything up on the board, I'd probably go with tremolo over delay. I just can't see delay (especially analog delay) as being all that useful on bass in a live context. I have plenty of natural reverb in any room that I play. I could see the merits of tap tempo digital delay, but would probably use it absurdly irregularly.

I have a DL4 and the 3 presets right now are:

analog delay (expression controls repeats)
auto volume delay (expression controls swell time)
rhythmic delay (expression controls beats)

It's great to be able to play with delay, but as far as a conventional bass player role, it takes a whole lot of headroom and volume to make it work with a band.

Delay is a very different kind of large.

I find it works best when the repeats aren't voiced with a lot of low mids. If the decay has attack and is more in the upper registers, then they can trail off a long time.

If they're voiced low then many repeats are hard to work with.

I'd check out Nads recent clips thread - he posted clips of three different delay pedals. In particular his 'normal' clip of the Malekko dark 600 was fantastic in my opinion.


Delay is probablly my second favourite effect after overdrive. I miss having 2 delays on my board and am holding out on the release of the EHX Memory Boy. I'd love it if it approached the sound of the mighty EHX DMM.

It's essential to me and the music I currently make. Long quiet delays with some modulation fatten up synth sounds, creating some very nice drone effects. It's not so good by itself on anything below the A string IMO, but used in combination with other effects, delay is wonderful. I'm just about to add a Timefactor to my board, alongside my Echo600D.
