Demo for getting club gigs

fastplant, I checked out a couple of your tunes.....very well played. Props to your drummer, he sounds like a good one. Nice variety on the covers as well. I think you guys should be a quite sucessful cover band.

Hey thanks man, yeah our drummer is pretty good, I just wish I could up load that demo as one mp3, it sounds better that way.

My experience has been that you probably don't "need" a perfect, high-quality demo, although it is always best to present your music in as positive and professional a light as possible. As for length, I would shoot for three tracks in large urban area where venue owners get bombarded with demos. It always helps to throw in a cover if you have one (just to give the venue owner a reference track), but it isn't always necessary...especially if you only play originals. In an area where competition isn't so heavy, you could probably up the number of tracks to 5 and include a wider variety of material....originals, covers, electric, acoustic, etc.

We're just making a demo now for my blues band, we decided on five songs in various styles, just to give some indication of what we sound like. We'll probably mix and master the demo ourselves, but buy CD pressing and artwork printing to make it look more like a "real" CD (if it's not too expensive at least).

The "sampler" or "snippet" CD idea is a good one, I'll have to talk to the band if we shouldn't do that. The bar owner can pay us if he wants to hear the whole songs.
