Random thought last night, can you use a DI box as a head, or at least a preamp or does it not have enough headroom to do either?

No, that is a boost. It's meant to drive the input signal of an amp harder. It would not work for what you're looking to do.
You need a power amp, like this (not what I would choose personally, but you get the idea):

They're not exactly my cup of tea, but the GK MB series heads are awfully tiny. Lots of folks on Talkbass swear by them.

They don't really make micro ones. You're best bet is to get a head like a GK MB800 and bypass it's preamp to use as a power amp, but you're not really gaining anything by using a DI in front of it for what you want. You'd be adding extra stuff with the DI.
