Hi there. I've been playing amplified gigs for about a year now and they are very hit and miss. If I get to do my own sound and setup? Great. If I don't, feedback, mess, horrible sound.
I'm using a CCB w/ weedwhackers and acoustically the sound is fine. Playing country & rockabilly is fine. If I need to play amplified I'm using a homebuilt piezo pickup with a transducer under each bridge wing. Last night I stood in for a local rockabilly guy in a cellar bar and mostly because of the soundguy and stage layout it was a bit of a trainwreak.
I have a bossCS3 compressor pedal which according to the manual has a 1M ohm input impedance. I've been using this as a buffered preamp (it has a level w/ boost), match the input impendance, provide some limiting and it has an EQ too.
A common problem for sound engineers is that I do not give them enough signal, they all get very confused and start acting like there is nothing coming through. At home and rehearsal I can plug this setup direct into my desk or into an amp and get a signal fine though it is a little quieter than a slab bass.
With various amps, you turn up and use someone elses backline, some see the signal fine, others perceive it as very weak.
Basically what I am asking is how can I get more volume in situations where the sound is out of my control? The guys who have been doing the sound recently just don't cut it. I figure a powered DI box will.
- match the impedance better than my CS3 giving a fuller sound.
- allow me to supply a line level signal for FOH monkeys or for whatever amp I'm having to use.
A worthy purchase or no? Also out of interest taping over the f holes and foam behind the tailpiece were defeated by bass amp behind me, drums behind me and a 4x12 cab pointing at me, a PA and all wedged on a 10 x 10 stage!
