DI plus amp track question--Line 6 vs. . . .

Hi Justin,
Just curious about the Bass PODXT that I gather you use sometimes.
Do you use it much as your "amp" track along with your DI? Would that be on demos, or also on final tracks for albums?
I'm just trying to decide, for my own humble set-up(and budget), if I should get one of those since it does seem to have bang-for-buck, or spend my money and energy on getting set-up to properly mic an amp too (currently all I have is a B100r and a 57). I guess my dilemma is: the POD would give me lots of options but it's not "real" air moving in front of a mic, while what I can afford with an amp/mic set-up would be very limited. I guess I'd spring for a better mic about the pruice range of the POD. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Dude, I would think a B100R and a 57 would sound pretty good. Some people on here don't think they're up to the task, but I like them because they have a natural and gradual low end roll off that keeps the soundman from making your signal mud in a mix.

No experience with the Pod, but Justin has tons. So just do whatever he tells you and you will be in Tone Nirvana before you know it!

I love my B100R--I think they sound great, and it does sound good with the 57, but I'm looking to improve on my "amp" sound for recording the most affordable way that gives me either a) more tonal options, or b) a much better mic'd sound, which I just assume would mean a better mic. But then I'm still stuck with B100r/mic all the time, as opposed to all the amp models of the POD! I dunno. The times I have used an amp track and a DI, I tend to favor the DI and the amp just tucked under there, so maybe modeling is the best solution for me?

Would a large diaphram condenser be good on a bass cab? My friend has a Blue Bluebird mic I can borrow to try out--he claims it's a good all-purpose mic. Then I'd have a better all-around mic too if I like something like that.

Never tried the Bluebird. Justin highly recommends the Heil PR 40 and I got one and I highly recommend it, too. It's a dynamic, but it's got great flat response, low end down to 20 hz, and sounds quite a bit like a condenser.

Anyway, Justin's the man when it comes to tone, so again, just do what he says and you'll be fine ;)

I dunno, it's all good. I really use whatever is in front of me. Sometimes a POD is so easy, and you can get GREAT tones from it. Some other times, I bust it out and get bummed, then mic up my B-15 with whatever and get stoked.

I think you can make anything work; just try some creative mic placement, different ways of isolating the cab, different preamps. Heil PR-40 is amazing on a 15" speaker.

POD is so damn handy though. I've done some big records just using that thing. Just remember: you have to get deep with it to really find your tone sometimes.
