I run a BCP-1 at 18V from the manufacturer's power supply that's included with the pedal. I have a power strip mounted to the top of my board, so using the wall wart was a non-issue. I have four of them up there, haha. Running with that power, the pedal is brilliant. I can't speak to 9V operation as I've never tried it.
As for the "changing your attack" thing; It's a compressor. It's going to change your attack to some degree, just as it is designed to do. To my ears, since the attack and release times are fixed, it has a fairly quick attack, and a middle of the road release. That does seem to give a little extra attack to the notes, but because of the low fixed ratio, the increase in attack is pretty minimal. If it's any indication; I don't bother switching it off during mellow songs where I want more pillow than punch.
