In Iron Maiden's Early Days documentary I'm pretty sure I remember seeing Steve with a sunburst Jazz. He also used Lado basses in the Powerslave era.
Might this be one of those?
Definitely. He also used one that had more of a Thunderbird/Explorer type of shape. In the video for Thr Trooper he's using a black Ibanez

Who could ever tell the way he was buried in the mix
What's interesting is that he did seem to use the wah to counteract this. When he wanted to be heard and had two guitars blaring, he let the wah scream!
Any one know if there is a bass only version of 'Call of Cthulu' out there somewhere? Might be his finest piece ever, but then again it's so buried in the mix I can't tell.... :-(
On full band stuff I can't hear him in the mix most of the time so it's hard for me to say...
On his solos I don't see a problem. I use effects when I'm forced to take a solo. Makes things more interesting for me and the audience.
