This guy’s playing is so totally percussive that I wonder if he should have been a percussionist. I think a lot of his vision would sound great on congas.

I love this kind of percussive playing. I use a similar technique on a few songs when I do just a bass + vocals set, it goes over really well. Gets people up and dancing.

As bass players we are all influenced by drums and percussion, and well we should after all that where it all started. Larry Graham the God Father of Slap developed his style when trying to cover for the loss of a drummer. Even on upright bass the Slap style was to add a percussive element to bass parts and solos that originated in bands with out drummers.
