Did I get ripped off? Canvas bass

I recently bought a bass from my local music store going only off their recommendation/ low price range, I paid $150 for this canvass bass:

Did I get a decent deal? I don't have any complaints with the sound so far, but this is my first instrument I've owned so I might not have the best ear for it.

The only question that needs to be asked is "how does it play" there are a lot of inexpensive "players" out there if it plays good and you like it then good.

+1 The first and by far, most important for any inexpensive or very expensive bass is whether it's working for you. If it sounds and plays ok then you have a winner. There'll be more basses but what works, works. Don't over think.

I'm not going to throw it out or anything, I was just wondering if canvas is usually **** or not because this is the first bass I've ever touched so I don't exactly have anything to compare it to, I probably should have tried the other basses in the store, but I didn't.

And it's also not something "safe" like a gibson or fender, it's some off brand chinese company I've never heard of.

Ok.

Firstly, we can't tell if the bass is any good or not based upon a terrible picture. We might be able to give you a few clues if the pictures are a little better. Can you provide some more? Take a couple of the fret ends, the string action (how high the strings are from the fingerboard), the nut and the bridge. That'll give us some indication of build quality.

Secondly, why didn't you try other basses in the store?!

I seem to have misplaced my phone so unless you want terrible webcam shots in place of terrible phone cam shots that'll be difficult.

I think a few here have touched on it.

1) Take a few better pics in the sunlight when you can. Particularly a few of the edges of the frets, the bridge, the tuners from the back, that sort of thing.

2) The real important thing here is whether or not it FEELS good to play. Does it play well? If so then you did fine. Learn on it.

If there is only one universal truth here at TalkBass it is that almost every single one of us went on to something else after our first bass. So don't stress over your first one too much. My first bass was AWFUL (and that's putting it nicely). But I moved on and kept learning.

By the way. It looks like you just joined. WELCOME to TalkBass. There is a WEALTH of knowledge here. Yes, you will bump into some sarcasm (maybe even from me). But weed through that to get to the good stuff, and there is TONS of good stuff. Learn how to use the search function (in the little blue line near the top of the page). A LOT of topics have already been covered and you can just read and learn. I came here several years ago with a lot of preconceived notions that have since been laid to rest through knowledge. So keep an open mind and learn from those of us who had to learn the hard way.

Bass is FUN. Enjoy the ride.

$150 is nothing in the price realm of musical instruments. Plus, it's your first bass.

No, you didn't. Learn to play on it, then flip it on CL in about a year and go buy a nicer bass once you're dedicated to being a bass player.

Also, it's against talkbass rules to request the value of something unless you are a supporting member (well worth the fee).

That one says model cmb20 osf, on the back of mine there's a sticker that says cmfb20dj2/ owa. Not sure what all of that means, but mine has an extra F in the model # that's gotta mean something right?

Also the wood grain on the body of mine looks more pronounced than the one on amazon.

That being said, you can find amazing deals on Fenders and Gibsons if you look hard enough and live right. I bought a Fender Jazz V for $175 off of Craigslist. The only thing wrong with it was a ding on the upper arm relief of the bass (easily relic'd that away), and it was in dire need of a cleaning and a setup.

Best resource you can have at your disposal is this forum and it's really deep well of knowledge. Let's hope your "impulse buy" turns into something you'll enjoy for a whole lot of years to come.

Ash body, two humbucking pickups, VTB wiring, a graphite nut, and a luggage-grade non-padded gig bag. Not too bad for $175 if it sounds OK and plays alright.

I do prefer to keep my luggage in a padded container, especially my bass guitar luggage.
