Difference between Svt-2 and 2 pro

Different preamp sections.

SVT-II only has a Volume, the 2-Pro has Drive/Gain/Master.

2 Pro has a couple extra sliders on the graphic EQ.

SVT-II sounds more like the original SVTs, the 2-Pro is more like the SVT-CL.

The II only has 1/4 jack outputs, the 2-Pros had bannana connectors (originally) and now speakons.



400 and 400+ are also totally different from each other.

IMO, as obvious from many other ranting posts, is that I by far prefer the SVT-II. I'm not saying the 2-pro is bad, just that IMO the SVT-II is better.

Extra features? (should also mention the 2-pro has a tuner out and a few other do-da's too).

I generally run my amp, and only change the volume. The EQ remains more or less the same (very slight mid bump, graphic EQ off). The SVT-II is so easily plug and play, you don't need the extra features (IMO).

mesa 400+ has 12 5881 out put tubes, 2 ohm out put in addition to 4 and 8. Later model 400+ has a 7 band eq.

Mesa 400 has 6 6550's or 6 6l6, can run either. plate voltage is higher than the 400+. The 400 chassis in not as deep, by about 2 inches. Preamp is the same, and I beleive that the main circuit board is the same.

I have both.

Do they sound very different from each other? What are the sound differences?

The only thing I know fersure is that the new ones (PRO II) have safety and protection
features that have been known to shut you down mid gig for no apparent reason. My early
90's model will simply champion on regardless of the situation. I would rather have my
tube amp blazing on the verge of explosion and get me thru the show than to go silent
via a false trip of some unnecessary safety device- solid state amps are another story......

Gigged a 2nonpro for years and have played a couple of 2s. IMO there is a huge difference with the nonpro being more "organic" and "tubey", although the 2 is still agood amp and possibly a better choice for some modern players. Having just bought an SVT VR I would have to say that, based on my memory of the 2nonpro, the VR is one step ahead of it again. However, must qualify that with the fact that I played the nonpro into an Ampeg 810 fridge while I am currently using Bergantino NV610 and 215 which I think are a step above the Ampeg cabs. I still have a 400+ so can compare this directly with the SVT and, while the 400+ is more versatile, for me the Peg wins hands down - more plug and play and so much more of that "tubey" sound. Hope this helps a little.

My understanding is that was a problem with only a few of the earliest pro's. Which was fixed by ampeg.
