Hi. I'm about to take the plunge and get a 5-string bass. I've played 4 string for years, on a Fender Jazz MiM, fretted and fretless. My amps are a SWR Workingman 12 combo, with an Ampeg 1x15 cab, and (when more oomph required), a GK 800RB head with a GK 2x10 and 1x15. Love them all. Different tone and character for the two amps when playing alone, but the tonal differences seem to evaporate when the whole band is cooking. I play frettless mostly these days, as I have a better feel of the instrument and notes and strings.
Will these amps stand up to the extra 5 notes made possible on the 5?
More specifically, Do I need a new amp?
I play jazz, bigband and small combos, and occasional blues. Not usully loud. With a big crowd, we have a PA so the SWR has been up to the task. The GK has a lot more potential, but I like the tone of the SWR a little better. Thinking about going all tube with a Mesa 400+, but now I'm wondering if THAT will stand up to the 5 string.
Top contender for the new bass is a Peavey Cirrus. If I can get the 5th string to work for me, I'll consider getting a fretless 5 of the same kind.
Advice? Will I need a new amp? Thanks in advance!
