Dilemma

This is why you don't sell things to friends.

Anyway, as long as you are sticking to your end of the agreement to pay him back, I'd keep it myself. But it doesn't sound like a long term player for you - you don't like the neck and want to keep it just to sell it later, so maybe sell it back and work out something for the case and upgrades you did.

++1 As long as YOU are paying in accordance with the agreement - which means how much AND when, then your friend has to agree with his end of the bargain. IF you are not, then expect him to come knocking at your door.
Yea dealing with friends and family is always risky business.

We set now set time that I pay him off. It was just until I paid him off but we both agreed three years max was the limit. I doubt it'll take that long anyways

Yeah, it sounds like he made a bad agreement, given his financial situation - and is now having seller's remorse...

If it were me, *I* wouldn't have spent any money on it until I had it paid off - getting it paid for would've been my priority, unless it needed something to be functional...

Anyways, I hope it works out for you and your friend...

Your friend is wrong. Although you have not paid in full, it is still a done deal. The bass is yours. And he wants you to deliver it to him? What kind of friend is this? Stick to your original agreement. You could SELL it back to him for a fair price after the work you put into the bass.

Long story short.

4 cons. 4 pros. I'm so stuck. Is an American Fender THAT Worth it? I heard these go up in value as years go by, but not the other models, like MIM, Squiers (duh...)

Why is that? I kinda want to keep it so I can sell it like ten years later for like $3000 or smth (jk)..I guess it kinda links to my thread about anyone selling their first bass and having some sentimental attachment to it?

Okay, this explains why you want to keep the bass even though it's uncomfortable for you to play on. To answer your question - in general, American Fender basses RETAIN more of it's original value than let's say your standard Ibanez. They don't go up in value unless you have a limited edition model. What made old Fender basses so valuable is the rarity of them. The number of intact pre-1960 Fender basses is extremely small- so the scarcity of them is what makes them much more valuable than what they originally sold for. Once again, if we're talking about today's standard Fender models- you won't see an increase in value later down the road - there are far too many of them out there nowadays.
Also, you mentioned you replaced the pickguard, I don't know what other parts you may have replaced, were they original Fender parts or third party? When you have an interested party in your Fender bass, the parts should either be original or of better quality. As an example, if you use let's say Squier pots/pickups on a Made in USA Fender bass, you drastically decrease the value of the bass.

My suggestion, if it's a standard model MIA Fender P bass and it doesn't work for you -don't get caught up with the possibility the value will appreciate in the future, it won't. Sell it for fair market value and buy a different model that'll work for you. Pay your friend what you owe, keep the rest and invest in a bass you'll want to play. Basses are best appreciated when you can play the thing. Just my 2 cents.

I think I might keep it and since my student loans come in next mon ill use some of that to pay him a good chunk to keep him quiet for a good five months or so. I would like to keep the precision bass because regardless of the thick neck I see it as a tool to make my hands move faster on my jazz neck. It's like training to become faster by running around with a backpack full of weights and then taking it off and you become faster.

He's not a bad guy. I never said he tried to make me go down to his place which was far away. It seemed like I would have to if I were to return the bass.

I'm not sure yet. I got until Wednesday to decide anyways. More comments and advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
