I was curious if anyone's ever done any side by side recordings with various direct boxes (either high end vs. low end or just various higher end units) to show their strengths and weaknesses, how they compare, etc... Anyone?

it's not all DI boxes, there are many preamps as well, but look at basstasters website, great comparisons between many popular DIs and preamps
I'd been there many times before (for pickups, strings, amps, cabs... pretty much everything BUT direct boxes 
) but hadn't been in a while... Thanks for the reminder!
ETA: That said, with the variety of different basses used on the site (though I love that it plays the same lines in all the samples), I'd still be interested in knowing if anyone else has done a straight up side by side comparison... say, between a Radial JDI or Countryman Type 85 and a cheaper Behringer or ART box...?
