Does a di box have any advantages over a xlr to 1/4 cable? It seems pointless to have a di box if I can use a cable straight into the mixer/pa system from my bass.

Direct guitar to system or di box

If you are suggesting to run the unbalanced instrument signal into a low impedance mike input, it won't sound right. The input impedance will be way, way too low to properly load the instrument output. The DI will have a very high impedance unbalanced input that will properly load the instrument output and give you the normal sound of the instrument.
