Dirt cheap budget basses

We"re not talking brand names but names you have never heard of.
Were they any good or just a lump of wood with strings on.

I started playing bass a few months ago (im 41) and my missus bought me a "cheetah" bass, medium scale, precision copy.
I"m not qualified to comment on vintage basses but a mate of mine pissed himself laughing when i showed him the bass ( plywood, crap pickups, etc, you get the picture ).
We Plugged it into his amp and he was blown away by the sound, he uses fender precisions and he couldn"t get one of his precisions to sound as good as this heap of shite, he just couldn"t believe the sound.

I"m pretty sure there"s loads of us out there that have bought really crap basses that sound better than higher end stuff but just wont admit it.

I Still have the bass but its hung on my wall as i prefer my yamaha, but i love the bass to death and it sounds like nothing i"ve ever heard.
Maybe its time to get it down again.

Five and a half years ago, I had never heard of SX. Rolled my eyes when guitar player told me he was getting a $100 bass for his son that had been recomended to him from some experienced players on another forum. This was before I was on TB as well.

Been gigging an SX for nearly five years now. Over four with it as my primary bass. Funny thing being that I use an MIA Fender Precision as it's back up. ;)

Doesn't surprise me any. Some time back someone put up a blind tone test on the Usenet bass forum. Oddly enough the SX won the contest hands down. Hey, I picked the SX for best tone myself. Then I bought an SX to "Jacoize" by stripping frets to make fretless. Once I got it, NO WAY was I going to trash that bass! It didn't take long to move up to main axe. Now I've got an SX fretless too and I keep thinking about picking up a few more for hideous bass experiments.

But to add to this story, there is a local used instrument store (of the Music-go-round franchise) and they get in hoards of clone basses with names that nobody ever heard of. I try them out and virtually all are hideously bad in more ways than you can imagine.

So yes, SX is a wonderful bright spot in the dark world of no-name student basses. But I keep remembering that in life good things do not go on forever. Hence I keep checking Rondo stock regularly for things I might not be able to live without...

(My backup is Fender Deluxe V MIM);)

I currently own four SX basses (the fourth was just delivered today and I haven't even seen it yet). My Fenders are all stored away in their cases, while the SX are out on stands where I can get to them easily.

The keyboards player in my band also plays rhythm guitar sometimes. There is no name on the headstock, and he doesn't know who made it, either. It's made of plywood and has crap pickups. Unfortunately in this case it sounds like you would expect. But it's ok because he has a high-end digital piano and a for-real Hammond and he doesn't play guitar very often, and his amp isn't as big as the real guitarists.

I haven't dealt with SX at all (although they do look like, and are, bargains) but I did come across a Stagg HH Jaguar bass...thing being sold in the $100s. Any experience with this brand? I have heard some negative things in the past but I was wondering if that has changed.
