Distortion and Preamp for Hardcore/metal

@monsterthompson

I considered the fzz based on listening to Year of the Knife bass player
Using a microtubes and another hyper fuzz clone the demon lung.

I’m pretty open to suggestions. just wanna avoid buying and selling a ton of stuff just to get something that fits the vibe I’m looking for.

The FZZ is pretty solid if you like that Hyper Fuzz octave sound. The clean blend and EQ are quite nice, but I’m not sure how well it fits your goals. I’ll check the Year of the Knife stuff on YouTube.

Obviously the Hyper Fuzz clones, Rat clones, and the Darkglass are all different flavors of good. The question of how well they fit your sound/needs is really the issue. I wish I had more specific experience and advice for what you’re after. I just know I like dirt and I know what’s stuck on my board.

For a dark horse, left field option there’s the Hilbish Sol Invictus. Two channels of pre/distortion that can be run in parallel. Not very clean, but certainly of interest if you lean towards the Red Fang Sunn Beta sound. It’s a huge pedal, but has some flexible output routing.

I appreciate all the help thus far! Lol the world of sub-genres makes for difficult pedalboard building and tone engineering.

funny enough I was eyeballing the 700 watt solid state monster Hilbish is putting out. I’m a tad weary cause I used to hear horror stories of Windhands equipment pooping out because the bass player was the one building it lol.

I might be 2 years late for your question, but the Quest for Distortion never stops.

For the "clean signal" I use an overdrive as a fake preamp: Catalinbread SFT, which sound incredibly good with low tones.

And for the distortion, I only use the Oppresive Cult Destroyer by Abominable Electronics, and I couldn't be happier: blend knob, toost toggle AND bass boost.

Hope that helps, even 2 years alter :)
